EDIT: Changed the background; it's much more dynamic now, yes?

The Fire-God and the Beast-Not-Slain.
Part of my elves' creation myth. (for the whole story, go here, but beware, the picture is old as crap)

Have you ever realized that everything is basically dark, and everything that is light is only light because it has a light source? So without all light, which isn't really matter, all matter would be dark. If there was no light, would there be shadow? Or if there was no shadow, would everything be light?
When you do a drawing, you don't draw the light, you draw the shadow, and it's the shadow that makes the form complete.
A wise man once told me that there is no moon without the sky.

Octo-icons are on hold while I figure out coloring issues.

You're welcome.

I love the bold colors and sharp contrasts. Makes me think of a quilt, or perhaps a stained-glass window (though without the obvious black partitions between each section). Of course, with the detailed outlines of the feathers, creating this in such media would be a nightmare. Collage, maybe.

The black shadow creature is also impressive, and seems like it should be animated with its chaotic anatomy and expressive jaggedness.

The background for some reason doesn't seem to fit. Maybe that's because the geometric circular shapes are so vastly different from the irregular shapes of the bird and beast. I'm picturing a number of wavy segments radiating from the same point as the circles as a possible alternative, although I can't really judge for myself how effective that would be without seeing it.

Nevertheless this is very, very awesome. KUTGW.

hmmm... interesting point about the background. I had another idea for it, too... maybe I'll test it out and re-upload.
thanks!

More hands grabbing for the phoenix. Yes, I think I like it better.

Some questions, What Elven creation myth? Are you an elf?
:iconpaleshadows:

woosh, imma eat some phoenix. Spicy. :) this is awesome

Lots better! It definitely makes the drawing more three-dimensional as well. Very nice work.
